Atomium

One of the icons of Brussels would be this one of its kind Atomium. Built prior to the world expo held in Brussels in 1958.
335 feet high with 9 connecting stainless steel metal spheres to make it into the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.

And you can go inside because it is also a mueseum!

Including the bottom entrance, 6 of the spheres are designed that you can visit, sadly only 2 spheres were open at the time of our visit.

The elevator shaft is open, so you can look up!

Amazingly it also takes you to the viewing platform in 22 seconds!!!

And since we were already up here, we thought why not get a fancy snack in the restaurant they have so conveniently located?

Sashimi.....
And coffee!! We were so high up we can feel the sphere sway in the wind- gulp!
10 feet wide tubes connect the spheres and is also pur way down.

Little excavator ride!

And in 1 of the spheres they had some cool information explaining how the Atomium was thought up, blueprinted then implemented and built in the 50's!

It was renovated in 2004 to make it safer(mainly structural in high winds!)

Fun day!
